Hard gel is shaped with a slight curve over the stress area of each nail, the spot where natural nails usually crack, instead of being brushed on flat.
Hard gel is not designed to soak off in acetone. It is reduced with the e-file by your technician, exactly the kind of precise work the tool is made for.
There is no tip or added length. The overlay shields the free edge of your natural nail so it can grow without snapping at the first bump.
What to expect, step by step
We look at how your nails bend, where they tend to break and what length you are aiming for. That tells your technician where to add the most support.
Nails are shaped and the dead cuticle is removed with the e-file. The nail surface is then prepared so the hard gel bonds evenly from side to side.
Hard gel is placed in stages and set under a curing lamp, kept thin at the cuticle and sides with a gentle rise over the stress area. The surface is then refined with the e-file so it looks smooth and natural.
We complete the finish you discussed at booking and go over care at home. You will also get a suggested return date, usually around 3 to 4 weeks out, when regrowth means the structure needs attention.

The terms overlap. Builder gel is a broad name for thick gels used to add structure, and BIAB is a popular soak-off builder gel. Hard gel is a type of builder gel that does not soak off in acetone and is filed down instead, which makes it a sturdy choice for structured manicures.
The hard gel itself is durable, but your nails keep growing. Most people come back after about 3 to 4 weeks, when the gap at the cuticle shifts the strongest point of the nail forward and makes a break more likely.
