Quick answer: In South Florida you can have a chemical peel in any month, as long as you can keep the treated skin out of direct sun for about a week and wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day afterward. Stop retinoids 1 to 2 weeks before, avoid tanning and hair removal on the area beforehand, and wait at least six months after isotretinoin. At Skin Lounge, peels run from $110 for a Face Reality lactic or acne peel to $230 for PRX-T33, with BioRePeel at $199.
There is no sun-free season in Boca Raton, so the right time for a peel depends less on the month and more on your next two weeks. If you can protect your skin before and after, a light peel fits into a busy South Florida calendar; if a beach week, boat day or outdoor wedding is coming, schedule around it. Here is what dermatology sources say about sun, timing and aftercare, and how the four peels on our menu compare.
Why does a chemical peel make your skin more sensitive to the sun?
A peel speeds up the shedding of the outer layer of skin, and the fresh skin underneath needs time to settle. Mayo Clinic puts it simply: with all peels, the new skin is temporarily more sensitive to the sun (Mayo Clinic). Sun matters before the appointment too. Mayo Clinic warns that too much sun exposure beforehand can cause permanent irregular pigmentation in treated areas, and that darker or lighter patches after a peel are more common in people with brown or black skin.
How strict you need to be depends on depth. The American Academy of Dermatology advises daily sunscreen once skin heals after a light peel, total sun avoidance until healed after a medium peel, and total sun avoidance for 3 to 6 months after a deep peel. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery gives healing times of about 1 to 7 days for superficial peels, 7 to 14 days for medium peels and 14 to 21 days for deep peels. The peels on our menu are designed for little to no visible peeling or mild flaking; medium and deep peels are physician procedures and are not on our menu.
What sunscreen should you use after a peel?
The AAD recommends a sunscreen labeled broad spectrum, with SPF 30 or higher, and water resistant, so it keeps working on sweaty or wet skin (AAD). Apply it 15 minutes before going out and reapply at least every two hours (AAD), and sooner after swimming or sweating. A wide-brimmed hat and shade do a lot of the work in the first week.
South Florida adds a few twists. The CDC notes that UV reaches you on cloudy and cool days, reflects off water and sand, and is strongest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daylight saving time, and it recommends protecting your skin all year, not just in summer. A walk along the Intracoastal or lunch on an open patio counts. If you are prone to dark spots or melasma, the AAD suggests a tinted sunscreen with iron oxide and SPF 30 or higher, which also helps against visible light (AAD).
When is the best time of year for a peel in South Florida?
Honestly, the calendar that matters is yours. Cleveland Clinic lists being unable to stay out of the sun during healing as a reason a peel may not be recommended, and advises avoiding tanning and direct sun for two weeks before each treatment (Cleveland Clinic). So plan backward from your plans:
- Two weeks before: no tanning, sunburn or long unprotected beach days.
- The week after: no beach, boat, pool deck or midday outdoor sports without shade, a hat and SPF.
- Before an event: book a low-downtime peel about a week ahead, and give a first-ever peel at least two weeks so you know how your skin responds.
Many Boca Raton clients start a series in early fall so skin looks its best for season, roughly November to April, when galas, weddings and visiting family fill the calendar. In summer, when beach time is hard to avoid, we lean on the lower-downtime options and space sessions around vacations.
What should you avoid before and after a peel?
- Retinoids: Cleveland Clinic advises stopping retinoid products one to two weeks before treatment unless your physician says otherwise (Cleveland Clinic). Also pause exfoliating acids and scrubs, and restart only once your skin feels calm.
- Isotretinoin: Mayo Clinic notes a doctor may caution against a peel if you have taken isotretinoin in the past six months (Mayo Clinic), and MedlinePlus advises avoiding waxing, laser treatments and dermabrasion during isotretinoin and for 6 months after. Check timing with your prescriber.
- Waxing and hair removal: Mayo Clinic advises stopping hair removal such as electrolysis and depilatory creams about a week before, along with facial masks, scrubs, hair dye and perms. We also ask you not to wax the area in the week before your peel or while skin is still healing.
- Cold sores and pregnancy: tell us about a history of cold sores, since peels can trigger a flare. Mayo Clinic lists pregnancy among reasons a doctor may advise against a peel, so check with your OB first.
- After your peel: skip saunas, hot yoga and hard workouts for about 72 hours, do not pick or rub flaking skin, and use a gentle cleanser, moisturizer and SPF only until your skin settles.

When should you see a dermatologist instead?
Melasma. The AAD explains that sunlight makes skin produce more pigment, which can darken existing melasma and trigger new patches, and that procedures for melasma, including chemical peels, should be performed by a board-certified dermatologist (AAD). The AAD also warns that products that burn or sting can irritate skin and may darken dark spots (AAD). If you have or suspect melasma, get a diagnosis and plan from a dermatologist first.
Deeper peels. If you want the stronger resurfacing of a medium or deep peel, that is a dermatologist’s procedure with one to three weeks of healing (ASDS).
Other red flags. See a dermatologist for painful, cystic or scarring acne, diagnosed rosacea or eczema, a changing mole or spot, or if you have skin of color and a history of dark marks after irritation, since the AAD notes people with skin of color can develop permanent pigment problems without the right expertise (AAD). And skip strong at-home peels: the AAD relays an FDA warning that some peels sold for home use have caused serious injuries (AAD).
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a chemical peel in the summer in Florida?
Yes, if you can protect your skin for about a week afterward and wear SPF 30 or higher every day. Summer is a good time for our lower-downtime peels, scheduled away from vacations and beach weekends.
How long should I stay out of the sun after a peel?
For the light peels on our menu, avoid direct sun, beach days and tanning for about a week, then keep up daily sunscreen. Medium and deep peels require much longer, from full healing up to 3 to 6 months.
How soon before a wedding or event should I get a peel?
About a week before for a low-downtime peel you have had before. If it will be your first peel, book at least two weeks ahead so there is time to see how your skin responds.
When should I stop retinol before a peel?
One to two weeks before is the common guidance, unless your physician tells you otherwise. Restart only once your skin has fully calmed, and never on skin that is still flaking.
How long after Accutane can I get a chemical peel?
Wait at least six months after your last dose of isotretinoin, and confirm the timing with your prescribing doctor before you book.
Are chemical peels safe for darker skin tones?
Many people with medium to deep skin tones do well with light peels, but dark marks after irritation are a real risk. Start gently, protect your skin from the sun, and see a dermatologist first if you have had lasting dark marks before.
Can I get a peel while pregnant?
Check with your OB before any professional peel. If your doctor prefers you wait, a gentle facial may be a better fit for now.
